The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious car / pedestrian accident that occurred on Rt 5 in the Town of Waterloo . Deputies report on 7-23-19 at approx. 8pm , they were called to a complaint of a young child that was struck on Rt 5 in the area of Macs Drive in. Sheriff’s Deputies state that a vehicle driven by Karen Gerlach 79, of 1021 Waterloo Geneva Rd was westbound on Rt 5 , when Leo M Butler age 2 of 1157 Waterloo-Geneva Road, wandered into the westbound lane and was struck. Butler was treated at the scene by North Seneca Ambulance and transported to Geneva General Hospital then airlifted by Life Net air ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester where he is in critical condition. Gerlach was treated at the scene and transported by Fingerlakes Ambulance to Geneva General Hospital and was treated and released. Deputies report Gerlach was not at fault and are investigating how Butler was able to wander into the road. Deputies had the road closed for over three hours while investigating the crash, and were assisted by Waterloo Fire , Waterloo Police Dept and the NYSP. Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators report the investigation is continuing.
