Petit Larceny Town of Covert

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on January 18th, 2024, Deputies arrested Courtney B. Bower, age 26, of 2097 West Seneca Street Ovid, NY 14521, for petit larceny.

The arrest stems from an investigation of a reported theft on 12/24/2023 from 9814 State Route 96 in the Town Covert. It is alleged that Bower left the store with a cart full of items she did not pay for.

Bower was processed and released. She is scheduled to appear in Covert Town Court on 2/9/2024 at 1:30PM to answer the charge.

Criminal Mischief Arrest Town of Junius

Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson reports on 01/20/2023 at around 3:50am Deputies arrested Jillian R. Mills, age 22, of Waterloo NY, for Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree.

The arrest stems from an incident in which Mills allegedly broke multiple items at a Junius residence following a domestic dispute. An Order of Protection was requested on behalf of the victim and Mills was transported to the Seneca County Correctional to await arraignment.

Three Car PI MVA in the Town of Fayette

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on Wednesday January 17th, 2024 at around 7:49pm, Deputies responded to the area of County House Road and State Route 96 in the Town of Fayette, for the report of a three car personal injury crash.

Upon arrival, Deputies observed significant damage to all three involved vehicles and multiple drivers were injured. Upon further investigation it was made known that Timothy D. Roberts, age 37 of 193 North Street Geneva, NY was traveling east on County House Road when his vehicle, a black Subaru Impreza, did not stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection of County House Road and State Route 96. Vivian C. Becker, age 28 of Romulus, NY was traveling south on State Route 96 when her vehicle, a white Volkswagen Jetta was struck on the passenger side by Roberts vehicle. This led to  Becker’s vehicle being pushed into the northbound lane of State Route 96 where Matthew B. Foster, age 28 of Waterloo, NY who was traveling north on State Route 96 in a white Honda Civic, struck the driver side of Becker’s vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Both Becker and Roberts sustained injuries from the crash and were subsequently transported by ambulance to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment. Roberts was issued several uniform traffic tickets in relation to the crash and will answer the charges in the Town of Fayette Court at a later date. The Waterloo Fire Department, North Seneca and South Seneca Ambulance, and New York State Police assisted the Seneca County Sheriffs office on scene.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident in the Town of Fayette


Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on January 15th, 2024, at about 10:17 AM, Deputies responded to the intersection of State Route 414 and Yellow Tavern Road Town of Fayette for the report of a property damage accident with injuries.

Upon arrival Deputies observed two vehicles with heavy damage. Deputies were assisted by Fayette Fire Department, extracting both drivers from the vehicles. After further investigation it was determined that Lindsay Shirk, age 38, of 6516 County Road 129 in Ovid was operating a 2017 Ford Expedition heading Northbound on state Route 414. Kathleen Irland, age 75, of 1965 Mills Road in Waterloo was operating a White 2020 Civic heading east on Yellow Tavern Road. As Shirk approached the intersection, Irland failed to stop at the stop sign on Yellow Tavern Road and was struck by the Expedition causing heavy damage to both vehicles.

Shirk was extracted through the windshield of her vehicle and transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries by Finger Lakes Ambulance. Deputies, EMT’s and Fire personnel performed life saving measures on Kathleen Irland but succumbed to her injures.

Deputies were also assisted on scene by North and South Seneca Ambulance, NYSP and NYS DEC and Seneca County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team.

House Fire in the Town of Varick 1/13/24

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on 01/13/2024 at about 8:19pm, Deputies responded to 1456 RTE 336 lot 12 in the Town of Varick, New York for the reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, Deputies found the homeowner, Howard Brothers Jr, along with Sabrina Brothers, Brianna Holbert, and Brian Holbert outside of the residence. It was reported that there was no one else in the residence.

Varick Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. North Seneca and South Seneca ambulance along with Mutal aid from Fayette, Border City, Romulus, and Waterloo Fire departments responded to the scene to assist.

Two Juveniles were transported to Geneva General hospital by both North Seneca and South Seneca Ambulance’s for smoke inhalation.

The Seneca County Fire investigation team responded and upon initial investigation it was determined the fire was accidental, but it is still under investigation. Fire damage to the home is estimated to be several tens of thousands of dollars and a vehicle was damaged as well. It was reported that there was no insurance on the home or vehicle. The red cross was contacted and will be assisting the family.

DWI Arrest

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on January 13th, 2024, at about 6:23 am, Seneca County Deputies arrested John Benedict, age 72, of 3530 Coats Rd Burdett NY, in the Town of Romulus for Driving While Intoxicated.

Deputies report that the arrest stems from an incident where Benedict was observed unconscious behind the wheel of a vehicle. Upon conducting a welfare check and an investigation Benedict was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Benedict was released on an appearance ticket to reappear in the Town of Romulus Court on February 23rd, 2024, at 10:00 AM to answer the charges.  

House Fire in the Town of Varick 01/12/24

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports on January 12, 2024, at approximately 0830, Deputies responded to 4999 State Route 414 in the Town of Varick for the reported residential house fire. Upon arrival, Deputies observed visible smoke from the roof. A vehicle was observed in the driveway and Deputies were unable to contact anyone in the residence. Deputies checked the residence and observed a working fire in the kitchen with a heavy smoke condition. Deputies and Fire Fighters conducted an initial search of the residence and did not locate anyone in the home.

Responding Fire Fighting agencies began arriving and fighting the fire. During this time, the Deputies met with the homeowner, Abby Wilson, who was not present at the time of the fire. The homeowner reported that no one was in the residence, however multiple dogs and cats were. Fire Crews were finally able to get the fire under control and began an overhaul. The Seneca County Fire Investigation Team responded and began an investigation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Seneca County F.I.T. Two adults and a child were displaced due to the fire. Seneca County Services and the Red Cross were contacted to assist the Family. The home was insured and due to the smoke and fire damage it is estimated to be about $100,000 in damages.

Responding fire departments included Varick, Fayette, Border City, Lodi, Ovid, Romulus, Waterloo, and Canoga. North Seneca Ambulance, Seneca County Codes and the Seneca County Fire Coordinator and the Fire Investigation Team also responded. No injuries were reported. New York State Police assisted on this case as well.

Aggravated DWI

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on January 9th, 2024, around 8:32 am, Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Jennifer E. Janas, age 49, of Vanliew Rd Auburn, N.Y. in the Town of Romulus for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated.

The arrest stems from a vehicle and traffic complaint after a concerned citizen observed a vehicle operating erratically while traveling Southbound on Sr 414 in the Town of Seneca Falls. Deputies later located the vehicle on State Route 414 in the Town of Romulus. Janas was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with .18 BAC or Higher, Driving While Intoxicated and Failure to keep right. Janas was issued appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in court on 2/23/2024 in Romulus Town Court to answer the charges.

Travel Advisory

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson has issued a Travel Advisory throughout Seneca County due to significant hazards on the roadways related to the high winds affecting our area. At the current time, there is a large number of emergency calls related to live electrical wires and trees down in many roadways across the County. There is no ban on travel, but it is requested that motorists avoid unnecessary travel at this time while emergency responders continue to clear the roadways. This travel advisory will be reevaluated in the coming hours as conditions are expected to improve.

AUO Arrest

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson reports that on 1/6/2024 at around 3:00 PM Deputies arrested Lexie R White, age 28, of Waterloo, NY, in the Town of Romulus. Upon investigation White was found to have a suspended driver’s license and was subsequently issued uniform traffic tickets for aggravated unlicensed operation 3rd (unclassified Misdemeanor) and uninspected motor vehicle (violation).

The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop that was conducted by a member of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office. White is to appear at the Town of Romulus Court at a later date to answer the charges.
