The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports on February 23, 2022, at about 11:21am, Sheriff’s Investigators arrested Laron J. Cheeks, age 23, formerly of 2478 Reed Road, Waterloo New York. The charges stem from a dispute where it is alleged that Cheeks threatened to shoot two Town of Waterloo residents with a handgun. Deputies and Investigators responded to the scene following a 911 call and immediately took Cheeks into custody. Cheeks attempted to conceal the handgun prior to the arrival of law enforcement, but it was later recovered following the execution of a search warrant. Upon the discovery of the handgun, it was found to be defaced with no serial number present.
Cheeks was charged with two counts of Menacing in the 2nd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E Felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony. Cheeks was arraigned on 02/23/22 at the Seneca County Centralized Arraignment Part Court where he was released on his own recognizance due to New York State Bail reform laws. Cheeks will reappear at a later date at the Town of Waterloo Court.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police and the Waterloo Police Department. North Seneca Ambulance also stood-by until the scene was declared safe.
