Press Release - Assault on Corrections Staff - Attempted Escape

CR#

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

12/31/2013 Seneca County Sheriff’s Investigators have charged Aaron L. Russ, age, 42, an inmate at the Seneca County Correctional Facility with Assault in the Second Degree, Attempted Escape in the 1st Degree and Promoting Prison Contraband in the First Degree in connection with an assault on a corrections staff member and an attempted escape.

On 12/30/2013 at approximately 7:57 PM, Russ while confined within the Maximum Housing Segregation Unit (MHSU) allegedly struck a corrections officer who was making his rounds in the back of his head with a laundry bag which contained several hard items.  Russ forced his way out of the MHSU and into the Housing Unit Day room and knocked the Corrections Officer to the floor and took the officer’s keys and attempted to unlock a secure door.  Other corrections officers responded to a call for assistance and took control of Russ without further incident.  At no time was Russ ever able to leave the secure housing unit area.  Russ has been placed in a secure disciplinary segregation unit.

The Corrections officer sustained contusions and abrasions to the head and hand and was treated and released at Geneva General Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Seneca County Sheriff Jack Stenberg praised the response of Corrections staff who responded to the incident as they had been trained to do and operated within department protocol and policy. “Our corrections staff performed admirably and at no time was the safety and security of the facility in jeopardy.  We have made the necessary reports to the NYS Commission of Corrections as required pursuant to law.”

Russ is being held in the Seneca County Correctional Facility without bail following an assault on a Sheriff’s Deputy on July 9, 2013. In that case, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from the Russ family who reported he had been acting erratically after not having taken his psychotropic medication.  Russ repeatedly punched a Sheriff’s Deputy in the face and head and was taken into custody after the Deputy fired two rounds striking Russ in the arm.

Russ will be arraigned later today on the charges.
