Press Release - Sheriff's Office - UPDATE - Infant Death - Romulus
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
01-23-2013 The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office has completed its investigation surrounding the death of an infant child in Romulus, New York.
On Friday, 09/14/12 Seneca County E-911 received a report of a child not breathing in the Hamlet of Romulus. South Seneca Ambulance, Romulus Fire Department Rescue and Seneca County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and attempted to resuscitate one year old Dieter Tackett II, who was not breathing. The infant was transported to Geneva General Hospital and later transported to the pediatric intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester where he died later that evening.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause of the infant's death was Lymphocytic Leptomeningitis, which is a form of viral meningitis.
“There was not then, nor is there now, any evidence to suggest foul play. Based on our investigation and that of the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office this was a tragic death of an infant and our hearts go out to the family and friends of Dieter Tackett II” said Sheriff Stenberg.
The Sheriff had harsh words for at least one news organization “One news organization falsely reported a cause of death within hours which frankly is very troubling. A family in the depths of grief had to not only deal with the loss of a loved one, but, had to endure the effects of irresponsible reporting which is very sad” said the Sheriff.
Sheriff's Investigators worked with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office and Seneca County Child Protection Services during the course of this investigation.
