FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seneca County Sheriff Tim Luce reports that the Family Services Unit will be producing a Seasonal Safety Brief four times a year.

Family Services Unit Spring Safety Brief

Did you know… A bicycle helmet is the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes! Children, teens and adults should all wear properly fitted bicycle helmets. To insure that children understand bicycle safety and enjoy lifelong bicycle safety behaviors, adults need to demonstrate the desired behavior when biking to include following the rules of the road and wearing a bicycle helmet.

Remember that bicycle traffic does fall under the rules and regulations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. It is unsafe to ride against traffic. Please remember to ride in the same direction as the flow of traffic utilizing bicycle lanes and other safe riding areas where applicable. All bicyclists must obey all traffic controls such as traffic signs and other signals. This is a requirement under New York State Law. Riders should never travel with more than two riders abreast. Bright colors or reflective clothing is always recommended during bicycle riding along roadways or other vehicle traffic areas.

In addition to bicycle riding rules, we would like to remind those engaging in running or walking along the roadways of a few safety tips as well. When walking or running along a roadway, pedestrians should be walking against traffic. Traffic should be flowing toward you as you walk or run. Wear reflective clothing so you are visible to drivers. All pedestrians on foot should use sidewalks or walking paths where possible. Please check back with us in June for our Summer Safety Brief.
