Press Release - PDMVA/ vehicle pursuit / attempted assault



  The Seneca County Sheriff's Office reports Sheriff's Deputies arrested an Ovid man on numerous charges after a vehicle pursuit on Wed 7-26-17. Deputies report on 7-26 at about 7pm they responded to Rt 5,  west of the Village of Waterloo for a property damage accident in which a white pickup truck struck the rear of another pick up truck and then fled the scene. The white truck- later identified as a 1988 full size Chevrolet had sustained some heavy front end damage.  Later the truck was spotted by an off duty NYSP officer driving recklessly at a high rate of speed on Rt 96A in Fayette. A Sheriff's Deputy spotted the truck  eastbound on  Rt 336 and activated his red lights and siren but the truck failed to stop and continued to drive at speeds of 80-85 miles an hour - sometimes on the wrong side of the road -at hillcrests - forcing other vehicles out of the way. The vehicle went south on Rt 414 , and another marked Sheriff's vehicle was northbound and the truck driver intentionally crossed completely across the road forcing the patrol car into the ditch, on Rt 414 in Varick. The patrol car was able to continue to drive out of the ditch and did not sustain any damage. The truck forced other vehicles off the road until the Sheriff's vehicle used a pit manuever and forced the truck off the road into a ditch to prevent any further danger. The truck came to rest on the east ditch on Rt 414 in Romulus just south of Cayuga Street.  The driver then fled into the woods but was apprehended shortly by Sheriff's Deputies , and identified as Loyd E Barnes age 24 of 2071 West Seneca St lot 2 Ovid NY.  Deputies report Barnes was charged with Attempted Assault in the 1st degree. 4 counts of Reckless Endangerment in the first degree, Unlawful Fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, resisting arrest along with numerous Vehicle and traffic charges including reckless driving, speeding and failure to keep right .  Barnes was also on parole and charged with a parole violation. Barnes was arraigned in the Town of Lodi Court and committed on no bail to appear in Ovid Town Court on Aug 1 at 0930. Barnes was also issued tickets for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, following too close, and driving on the shoulder and is to appear in Waterloo Town Court on Aug 25 at 0830 on those charges for the original accident. Deputies were assisted by the NYSP .  Deputies report that no injuries were sustained during the incident and only minor damage to the patrol car. Barnes' vehicle also sustained minor damage from being pitted and was towed from the scene.   The Sheriff's Office reports the investigation is continuing and are asking if anyone has any informaton or witnessed the incident to call the Sheriff's Office at 315 539-9241.
