Press Release - Two arrested for drug and weapon charges and vehicle used in shooting recovered



09-12-2015 Seneca County Sheriff’s Deputies in their continuing investigation into the shooting on County Road 124 in the Town of Varick on Thursday evening this morning with the assistance of the Seneca Falls Police stopped and executed a search warrant on a 2011 GMC Yukon which is believed to be one of the vehicles that transported persons to the County Road 124 Cayuga Nation residence. 

The vehicle was observed at the Lakeside Gas Station on Route 89 in the Town of Seneca Falls and left after a short time and was subsequently stopped by Sheriff’s Deputies and Seneca Falls Police at the intersection of Farron and Noble Road in the Town of Seneca Falls. 

The vehicle was operated by Garth Vanevery, age 41, of Cossad Road, Seneca Fall, along with a passenger, Michelle Seneca, age 38 also of Cossad Road, Seneca Falls, New York.  Deputies executed the search warrant and discovered approximately approximately 10 grams of Cocaine, a digital scale, baggies, commonly used to package illicit drugs, along with over $750 dollars in US currency, a billy club, electronic stun gun and a black jack. 

The vehicle driven by Vanevery was impounded and seized as evidence .

Vanevery was charged with Criminal Possession of a controlled substance in the Third Degree, a Class B Felony; Criminally using drug paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree, (2 counts), and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (3 Counts).

Seneca was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (3 Counts)

Both were arraigned before Judge Sapio T/O Fayette and committed to the County Jail without bail.

Both Vanevery and Seneca admitted they are members of the Cayuga Nation Unity Council.

 Seneca County Sheriff Jack Stenberg , Undersheriff Gary Sullivan and Chief Stuart Peenstra said “it is clear to law enforcement that there is an apparent extreme lack of control within the Unity Council. “

Our investigation into the shooting is continuing and we have identified several persons of interest.

 “The arrests this morning are a result of continued excellent teamwork with the Seneca Falls Police and Sheriff Deputies.
