Press Release - Sheriff warns residents of another on-going telephone scam
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
09-08-2014 Seneca County Sheriff Jack S. Stenberg reports that several Seneca County residents have received calls from person(s) claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The fraudster tells residents that they are in a difficult situation and that the IRS would be filing a lawsuit against them and the local police would be coming to arrest them.
Fortunately, our residents were aware of this scam and frustrated the fraudster who eventually hung up. “We have seen cases where these fraudsters ask residents to purchase a green dot card and call them back with the green dot card pin number so they can credit their account”, said Sheriff Stenberg.
The IRS will never contact anyone by phone or ask for personal information over the phone. Sheriff Stenberg is urging residents to be aware of the countless scams like this one or others that are going around the County. “If you are in doubt, call 911 and have an officer respond to your location to better assess these fraudulent telephone calls,” said the Sheriff.
