K-9 Unit

 

Both "BEN" and Deputy Fowler and "AKEN" and Sergeant Rhinehart participate in monthly training sessions to keep their senses keen.

Both Sheriff's Canine units are available to all Seneca County Law Enforcement Agencies.

K-9 Aken

                                                                                                                                                                             K9 Aken was born 01-13-11 in the Czech Republic. He received his initial training in Slovakia, and was then shipped to Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville PA in July 2012 where his training was completed.

His handler, Sergeant Michael Rhinehart met up with him on August 27, 2012 and together they both went through 6 weeks of training in narcotics detection and patrol work.

Aken is trained and certified in the following areas:

  • Narcotics detection
  • Criminal Apprehension
  • Building search
  • Area search
  • Article search
  • Tracking
  • Handler protection

Aken is a male German Shepherd.

K-9 Ben

K-9 "BEN" and handler, Deputy John Fowler

K-9 BEN is 3 year old German Shepard  born in Holland.  BEN was  "green" or "untrained" when he arrived in the United States and shortly thereafter began his training.

His handler, Deputy John Fowler met up with BEN in the Fall of 2017 and together they both went through 6 weeks of training in bomb detection and patrol work.

BEN is trained and certified in the following areas:

  • Bomb Detection
  • Criminal Apprehension
  • Building search
  • Area search
  • Article/Package search
  • Tracking
  • Handler Protection

BEN is certified in Patrol/Tracking and Explosive Detection by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services,  Bureau of Municipal Police.
