FATAL MVA

At around 3:00 AM the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on 10/02/2021 Sheriff’s Deputies along with several fire agencies responded to the area of 8913 state route 96 in the Town of Covert for a serious one car motor vehicle accident. Upon further investigation it was discovered the driver, Tacara Ortiz age 22 of 162 Ludlowville road Lansing, New York was traveling north bound on state route 96 when her vehicle left the roadway and made impact with a culvert, this resulted in the vehicle becoming airborne and to roll on its side where it came to rest in a nearby ditch. Fire crews from Interlaken, Lodi, Ovid, and Trumansburg along with members from Trumansburg ambulance used stabilization and extraction equipment to safely remove the driver. Tacara Ortiz was transported to Cayuga Medical Center where she later succumbed to her injuries. The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the accident.

Vehicle Pursuit

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on October 9, 2021 Seneca County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Eric Scott Weiler Age 18, of 7045 Garner Rd, Wolcott, NY, in the Town Of Junius at 6:16pm. Eric Scott Weiler was charged with 2 counts of Speed over 55(violation) Reckless driving (unclassified misdemeanor) and unlawfully fleeing a police officer in the 3rd degree (Class A Misdemeanor).

Deputies report that Weiler was observed traveling above the State speed limit of 55mph and when a Seneca County Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle it attempted to flee the Deputy. Weiler was taken into custody a short time later and no injuries were reported. Weiler was issued an appearance ticket and is to appear in the Town of Juinus court on October 21st to answer the charges.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH:

September 2nd, 2021: Investigators, working with Geneva P.D., apprehended a suspect wanted in connection to a double homicide in Rochester.

September 3rd, 2021: Deputies apprehended a motorist that fled a traffic stop and led officers on a pursuit through several Seneca County townships.

September 11th, 2021: An ATV accident under investigation in Fayette left a victim in critical condition.

September 14th, 2021: A new targeted enforcement program: D.D.A.C.T.S.–(Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety) was launched at the Outlet Center in Junius.

September 19th, 2021: Deputies partnered with Seneca Falls and Waterloo PD to conduct a Child Safety Seat detail at the Seneca Falls Fire Department.

September 28th, 2021: A truck struck an asphalt roller on Rt 89 in Ovid. Officers are reconstructing the accident which caused a fire, a hazardous spill and left a man in critical condition.

September 30th, 2021: A man was arrested when Deputies responded to a Domestic in Fayette. It was alleged that a woman was strangled and pushed with a young child present.

PI Accident / DWI

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on 10/06/2021 at around 9:00 pm, deputies arrested Frederick K Keefer, 76, of Seneca Falls, NY for Driving While Intoxicated following a single vehicle crash. Deputies responded to the area of Seybolt Rd and Cemetery Rd in the Town of Fayette for the report of a vehicle in the ditch. Deputies say Keefer was traveling southbound on Seybolt when his vehicle left the roadway and went into the ditch. Keefer was treated and transported to Geneva General Hospital for minor injuries. Keefer was charged with DWI and other Traffic Violations and is scheduled to appear in court on a later date to answer charges.

Citizen’s Police Academy

Sheriff Tim Luce has announced that the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office will be holding its annual Citizen’s Police Academy this November. The purpose of the academy is to give the citizens of Seneca County a better understanding about law enforcement and how the Sheriff’s Office operates within the community.

The academy will consist of four Wednesday night sessions: November 3rd, 10th, 17th, and December 1st 2021. Sessions will begin at 6:00 PM  and last until approximately 9:00 PM. Each session will focus on a different division of the Sheriff’s Office and give an inside look at Administration, Road Patrol, Investigations and Corrections. Classroom and hands-on activities will be conducted  by the professionals who do the job.

Candidates that complete the program will be scheduled for an optional ride-a-long with a Deputy, receive a certificate of completion, and a t-shirt.

Candidates must be able to attend all four sessions. Anyone that is interested can contact Danielle Thompson at 315-220-3403. Or email dthompson@co.seneca.ny.us.  A light background check will be conducted on all interested candidates.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, a resident of Seneca County, and also have a genuine interest in good citizenship. There are no physical requirements, only a desire to learn.

Covid-19 protocols are currently in place so please bring a mask. Masks will also be available free of charge.

The academy class size will be kept small to maximize the experience. Eligible applicants that do not make this academy will be considered for future academies.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH:

June 5th, 2021: A Domestic Violence call in Varick resulted in multiple arrests. It was alleged the suspect violated a court order of protection, trespassed, assaulted and threatened with a knife.

June 11th, 2021: Investigators arrested a suspect for stealing a car, wallet and credit cards in Waterloo. The property was recovered.

June 22nd, 2021: NARCO charged a suspect for allegedly possessing and selling methamphetamine in Waterloo.

June 23rd, 2021: Alleged thieves from the Outlet Center in Junius fled and crashed into a car while leaving. They then fled the scene of the crash. The driver who was hit was seriously injured and later died. An adult and 1 adolescent offender have been charged.  

June 27th, 2021: Corrections Officers organized a team to raise money for Special Olympics by playing flag football at the Buffalo Bills field. Over $6500 was raised—enough to sponsor 13 Special Olympics athletes for a year.

June 30th, 2021: Deputies responded to a 3 car crash in Ovid that resulted in multiple injuries.

May 3rd, 2021: A suspect was picked up for failing to appear for a Criminal Contempt of Court 1st degree in the Town of Covert.

May 4th, 2021: A suspect was charged with Grand Larceny counts by Investigators. It was alleged that the suspect stole debit cards in the Town of Tyre

May 11th, 2021: A driver in the Town of Ovid was charged with Felony DWI after being involved in a personal injury car accident.

May 24th, 2021: NARCO executed a search warrant in the Town of Waterloo. A suspect was charged for allegedly possessing unlawful firearms and crack cocaine.

May 27th, 2021: NARCO charged a suspect in Seneca Falls for allegedly possessing fentanyl with intent to sell.

May 2021: 3 persons were apprehended on warrants for failing to appear in court on charges that included Theft, Criminal Contempt 1st and Criminal Sale of Cocaine.. All 3 were released upon arraignment.

Criminal Contempt of Court Arrest

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports, on June 1st, 2021, members of the Narcotics Unit charged Samuel J. Eckert, age 32, of 941 Waterloo-Geneva Rd. lot 32 with one count of Criminal Contempt in the first degree and one count of Aggravated Family Offense.  It is alleged that Eckert was in violation of an active stay away order of protection issued out of the Town of Waterloo Court.  Eckert has previously been convicted of Criminal Contempt in the second degree within the previous five years, therefore elevating the above charges to felonies.  Eckert is to be arraigned at CAP on June 1st, 2021 at 7:00PM.

March 4th, 2021: A violent domestic occurred in the Town of Varick involving felony assault and strangulation. The suspect was apprehended without incident.

March 11th, 2021: Deputies and CIT Officers responded to an armed stand-off in the Town of Ovid that lasted all night. The situation was resolved peacefully with no one injured.

March 17th, 2021: Investigators charged an inmate at the jail for allegedly damaging a fire alarm sprinkler resulting in a false fire alarm.

March 22nd, 2021: Deputies charged a suspect for possessing cocaine and allegedly violating a stay-away court order of protection.

March 26th, 2021: NARCO charged a suspect for allegedly possessing and selling crack cocaine in Seneca Falls.

February 3rd, 2021: Deputies responded to a Domestic Violence call in the Town of Fayette. It was alleged a victim was threatened and restrained. The suspect was arrested without incident.

February 3rd, 2021: Investigators arrested a suspect for allegedly committing a residential burglary in the Town of Waterloo.

February 22nd, 2021: Deputies responded to a structure fire at a farm in the Town of Romulus. Losses exceeded $150,000. The cause was determined to be accidental.

February 23rd, 2021: The Sheriff’s Office presented their Reform plan to the Seneca County Board of Supervisors at an open meeting. The plan was approved and filed with Albany.

February 25th, 2021: NARCO arrested a suspect for allegedly possessing and selling crack cocaine in Waterloo. 

February 2021: An Investigator completed Forensic Interviewing of Children certification training.
